Experience the real Cornwall

Cornwall has a rich and colourful heritage which is celebrated across the county. You won’t need to travel far from Bosinver to discover the region’s history and find out what this wonderful part of the world is all about. Here are some suggestions for places to visit and things to do but also take a look at our blog posts for many more personal recommendations of the best experiences Cornwall has to offer…

See beautiful gardens

Cornwall is well known for its spectacular gardens, each with a story, from the painstaking restoration of the Lost Gardens of Heligan to pioneering work in conservation at the Eden Project, both of which are just a short drive away from Bosinver.

Discover the beaches

There are miles and miles of beaches, all offering something different! Some are right on our doorstep and others are worth travelling a little further afield for. Whether you want to entertain the little ones or do some watersports, there is something for all.

Walk locally

There’s a lovely three mile circular walk from Porthcurno along the cliffs which is great for families. It passes through Penberth, a pretty fishing village owned by the National Trust and has featured in TV adaptations of novels by Cornish author Rosamunde Pilcher.

Poldark experience

A trip to Poldark country allows you to visit some of the spectacular locations used to film the famous TV series. The free map of the Poldark filming locations includes Charlestown which recently doubled as Falmouth harbour in some of the scenes and is just a 10 minute drive away.

Daphne Du Maurier’s Fowey

After browsing some of the shops in Fowey, take the Bodinnick Ferry and climb the hill to the start of the Hall Walk. Heading towards Polruan, every twist and turn reveals another breathtaking view. It’s not hard to see why du Maurier was so inspired by this part of Cornwall!

Learn of mining heritage

Set in 26 acres of woodland, China Clay Country Park is ideal for a family day out. Now part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, the park is set in the grounds of two former working china clay pits. Find out how china clay was mined and what it was used for.

Enjoy fishing

Fishing has always been a huge part of Cornish culture, and if you’ve never been fishing at sea before, you’re in for a real treat. Take to the ocean waves and go fishing for mackerel (one-hour trip) or go wreck fishing (half or full day trip) and take your catch home!

St Austell Brewery Centre

Here you will find an interesting, interactive museum where you can find out the history of the brewery, and their pubs, beers, wines and spirits, plus the Cornish families who created them. You can even walk through and see the brewing process for yourself!

Cycle the Camel Trail

Head to Bodmin for the start of the Camel trail, one of the most popular and scenic cycle routes in the UK. The Camel Trail runs from Padstow to Poley’s Bridge, and boasts spectacular views along the whole trail, and is traffic free, making it ideal for families.

“Arrived home yesterday after an excellent stay in Apple Cottage. My Daughter (age 3) loved her whole week here and thanked us both for taking her on such a wonderful holiday. There is always something to keep the kids entertained which as any parent will know is not always easy but if achieved makes life easier.”
