The Minack Theatre is one of Cornwallโs best-loved visitor attractions, and itโs not hard to see why. The opportunity to watch an open air performance in one of the most dramatic settings in the world is not to be missed.
Carved from the granite cliffs overlooking Porthcurno, the Minack Theatre was a labour of love for its creator, Rowena Cade. Although it looks as though it could have been there for centuries, itโs actually just over 80 years old. You can read more about its fascinating history on the Minack website.
Performances are put on between April and September, and take place in all but the most severe weather. Thereโs a huge range to choose from each year, including a range of adaptations of well-loved books such as Peter Pan and David Copperfield, classic Shakespeare, musicals and operatic performances. The season concludes with Proms at the Minack.
The cafe serves a variety of good value food and drink, or you can bring your own. Many people arrive early to soak up the atmosphere and have picnic before the show starts.
Daytime visits and childrenโs shows
If you donโt have the time to spare for an evening performance, you can visit in the day. Explore the theatre and uncover the the story behind it by visiting the Rowena Cade exhibition.
There are also a range of childrenโs shows/storytelling mornings which will delight younger family members.
Top tips: Get there early if you can and spend some time relaxing on Porthcurno beach, walk the coast path, or visit the excellent Telegraph Museum. Donโt forget your layers โ even if itโs hot in the day, it soon cools down in the evening!
