Food & Catering in Cornwall

We often hear the plea that self catering is not a real holiday for Mum - never fear, we have that in hand too.

Until recently if you asked anyone to name the speciality foods produced in Cornwall, they would probably nominate the Cornish pasty or clotted cream - how things have changed since Rick Stein began promoting himself and his local food heroes on TV, altering our eating habits and fuelling us with a desire to want to savour fresh, local food.

Cornwall's mainstay industries have long been fishing, farming and tourism and with the recent decline in the profitability of the first two and the rise of our tourist industry, producers have had to specialise and supply high quality products to survive. Our farmers here in the south west produce some of the finest quality vegetables and meat and the trend is to sell it in local farmers' markets and farm shops. Often enterprising families will go on to produce fabulous finished products such as Roskilly's ice cream made with milk from their herd of Jersey cows, local dairy farmer Bill Clark and his award winning clotted cream, Sally Lugg's herd of Primrose Porkers at Redruth and Lynher valley's nettle coated yarg cheese to name but a few. Most visitors yearn to eat freshly caught fish when they are here and it is possible to buy locally at Fowey fish www.foweyfish.com or if you are in port when the fish arrives at Looe or Mevagissey, you can bargain with the fishermen and buy it on the quay!

Cornwall is rapidly becoming one of the gastronomic centres of the country. Besides Rick Stein's Seafood restaurant in Padstow, Jamie Oliver has just set up a branch of his 'Fifteen' restaurants in Watergate Bay near Newquay and Jean Shrimpton's Abbey restaurant near Penzance holds one of the few Michelin stars hear in the county. Our local is the Polgooth Inn in the village - excellent food and in walking distance of Bosinver, so no drive to do if you fancy that extra glass of wine! Our best local restaurants are the School House at Pentewan, Revival at Charlestown and the Rising Sun at Portmellon, plus the fabulous Sam's bistro at Fowey.
