Autumn breaks in Cornwall

Waves rolling into the beach in Cornwall, glistening from the sun.

Imagine mellow autumn days exploring the coast path, discovering secret sandy coves where you can bask in the afternoon sunshine and enjoy a dip. As the day draws to a close, beat a path to a beachside cafรฉ to watch the sun sink below the horizon and listen to the waves lapping the shore while you dineโ€ฆ

You can enjoy all this and more on a weekend break in Cornwall during September or October. While the days are gradually shortening there are still plenty of hours of daylight to make the most of what this spectacular county has to offer โ€“ but without the summer crowds.

Top reasons to visit Cornwall this autumn

Beaches
From endless stretches of golden sand and excellent surf to family beaches where the kids can swim and explore the delights of the rock pools, Cornwall has a beach (or several) to suit. During September and October you can enjoy room to roam, and thereโ€™s the added bonus that the sea is warmer at this time of year than any other. And from 1 October, dogs are welcome back on to beaches that operate a seasonal dog ban.

Wildlife watching
Early autumn is a great time for wildlife watching. Our resident grey seals have their pups at this time of year, and youโ€™re also likely to see a range of wading birds, sea birds (such as shearwaters, petrels, gulls and skuas), basking sharks, sunfish, whales and dolphins. We recommend AK Wildlife Cruises, who run regular trips from Falmouth.

Food
Cornwall is renowned for its mouth watering produce and world-class chefs. Celebrate the bounty of the land and sea at one of the upcoming festivals this autumn.

Great Cornish Food Festival (Truro), 22nd – 24th September 2017
Eden Beer Festival, 30th September 2017
Falmouth Oyster Festival, 12th -15th October 2016

Walking
Autumn is the perfect time of year for walking in Cornwall. The South West Coast Path website has lots of suggestions for autumn walks in Cornwall. The the Fal River websiteย also offers plenty of inspiration for exploring this beautiful area on foot.
