A Postcard From Bosinver

By now all our previous customers should have received an email or card pointing them to look at our new website. We have received many positive comments and the amount of new customers and bookings already received for 2006 confirm that it has been well worth the long hours spent staring at the computer screen to compile it!

Many thanks to those of you who voted for us for us in the Cornwall Tourism Awards. We have been short listed but the system is very secretive and the winners do not receive any notification prior to the award dinner in November – so we are still waiting for news.

We have had a very busy summer. Higher Hill was finished on time – just – as always and everyone who has stayed there so far has loved it. Dave and Helen have been putting the fence back this week – the ground was too soft before now and the horses are eagerly waiting to get back in the lovely fresh grass as soon as possible. Tinker and Lovejoy are back after winning first prize in a local ploughing competition – this lovely photo was in the Cornish Guardian last week.

The autumn weather has been kind and many visitors have spent whole weeks here without a spot of rain. We kept the pool open as the sun has been so hot and people were sunbathing there last Tuesday.

We had a Bosinver first on Friday as two guests arrived by bike to stay in Cherry cottage. They had come by train with their bikes but are planning trips around the county by bike and I think they deserve congratulations for their effort to dump their car in favour of two wheels and lots of effort. Also last week we had two more mature ladies staying in Coliza without a car. They made lots of trips by public transport and enjoyed the walks around Bosinver and Polgooth. There are incentives to be car free – the Eden project and National Trust offers reduced entrance fees to those who do not arrive by car and of course shopping and eating are not a problem at Bosinver with the pub and village store just down the lane.

We have now linked up with an organisation called Active-8. They have had the brilliant idea of linking up the accommodation and activities available throughout Cornwall. This winter they are offering guided walks, a day learning how to throw a pot at a local pottery, horse riding, mountain biking and canoeing. Log on to www.active-8.org to learn more

Bosinver seems to have become something of a party venue. Last week we had a surprise 50th with much subterfuge beforehand to lure the unsuspecting star to his party! The week before saw a wedding and several milestone birthdays. Ken, our local chef has been kept busy and everyone has raved about his food.

During the last week of September I flew over to the Ukraine as a delegate in the 2nd European Congress on Rural Tourism. It was a fascinating few days in a country emerging from years of being part of the Soviet bloc. It was in Yalta, in the Crimea, alongside the Black Sea. It is a truly beautiful place and the people we met were really friendly but I struggled with the language and the Cyrillic alphabet, so even reading signs in the airport was nigh on impossible.

Not just for kids!!!

Back to Bosinver and our plans for the coming winter. Pentree is next in line for refurbishment. We are planning to add another bathroom and a conservatory to take advantage of its views over the field. The farmhouse is having a new bathroom and I am starting to make mental notes about which curtains, carpets and bedding need replacing. The only problem seems to be getting into the cottages to do the work as the bookings just keep on coming!

Will be in touch again soon.

Pat
